Press Release

Indigenous Peoples and Social Movements Continue the Uprising

The struggles of Indigenous Peoples and Ecuadorian society have accomplished the elimination of the State of Emergency and the reduction of gasoline prices, but there has yet to comprehensive governmental response that can resolve the crises that exist on the national and provincial level.

Ecuador needs a real tributary reform, a re-ordering of fiscal expenditures, the cancellation of foreign debt, modernization without selling the strategic sectors of the state, improved health and education system, support for Peasant Social Security (Seguro Social Campesino), the reactivation of small agrarian economies and micro-enterprises, and the creation of a development fund for the Indigenous Nationalities that will help provide more basic services and stimulate our own economic forms.

Moreover, since generating confidence in the national economy is fundamental, we call on the Superintendent of Banks to provide information about the particular situation of each bank in order to have the necessary data to detect the actions of currency speculators and penalize them and other functionaries that may be responsible.

A response to these demands is urgently needed so that the majority of Ecuadorians can leave behind the conditions of misery and hunger in which we find ourselves. To that end, the Government and the Congress need to be responsive to the demands of the Indigenous Peoples and the various social sectors so that through a National Accord we can foster a change in the economic, social, and political model. This will guarantee an improvement in the quality of life of Ecuadorians and bring us closer to reaching a real democracy. This National Accord between various social sectors, the Congress, the Executive, and State bodies should be implemented starting tomorrow, Friday.

The National Congress and the National Government will continue to be responsible for the effects of the Levantamiento (uprising) so long as there is no response to the national and provincial demands. This silence is a demonstration of the inattention that the regions, provinces, and indigenous nationalities have suffered.

Without an immediate response, we will begin a NATIONAL MARCH from the provinces to the capital and we will remain in Quito until our demands are met.

Antonio Vargas
President
