Indian Uprising Against The Abuse of Power

CONAIE informs the nation of the initiation of the Levantamiento (Uprising) of the Indigenous Peoples and Nationalities again the government measures. This action will last indefinitely as decreed by the Indigenous Peoples and Nationalities in the face of a state of social and economic upheaval caused by President Jamil Mahuad, Jaime Nebot, and the banking elite.

The Indigenous Peoples declare the indefinite paralyzation of roads and the blocking of products to markets until the President demonstrates a genuine will to reach national accords with those most affected by his policies: the poor and distinct sectors of the society in order to find egalitarian and democratic solutions to the crisis.

Through this Levantamiento the Original Nationalities and Peoples of Ecuador demand:

  • Lifting the State of Emergency.
  • Revoking the economic measures.
  • The immediate return of funds given to banks or the confiscation of their goods.
  • The elimination of banks with economic problems and the punishment of those responsible for the mis-management of citizens' funds.
  • The withdrawal of the Legislative Projects sent to Congress, and that these be subject to the prior consolation and search for consensus among the various sectors of Civil Society.

Facing this crisis we demand:

  • The realization of a Tax Reform, that contemplates the broadening of the base of contributors, eliminating loopholes, and punishing tax-evaders

CONAIE INVITES all the sectors of society, ALL THE NATION TO RISE UP, to join the expressions of INDIGNATION, develop different protest initiatives, close roads, bang pots, turn off lights for 10 minutes at 7:00pm, wear black symbols, meet on street corners, sing of reality and indignation, call radio and television stations, newspapers etc.

Assuming the mandate of the Indigenous nationalities and peoples
