Ecuador-Peru Border Conflict

Here are selected resources which present an Indigenous perspective on the border conflict between Ecuador and Peru. For background on the conflict, see this document on the 1995 Peruvian-Ecuadorian border conflict. It comes from Washington, D.C. (probably from the State Department) and its analysis is somewhat slanted in favor of Peru. For another version of the story from Ecuador's perspective, see this document on the territorial problem between Ecuador and Peru.

The conflict has most affected indigenous groups in the Amazon. COICA responded with a proposal described in this story Indigenas proponen parque binacional fronterizo. Also see this note on Amazon Indigenous Communities call for Peace/Indigenas amazonicos piden paz and IPS's story Indigenous Peoples, the Invisible Victims of War.

In addition to these materials from the Amazon, CONAIE has also released several statements, letters, and press releases on the conflict:

Other related materials include:

Some of the information included here was received at the offices of the South and Meso American Indian Rights Center (SAIIC) in Oakland, California.
